Teeth whitening, also known as bleaching, is among the most requested cosmetic dental procedures. This is a simple and non-invasive way to enhance the appearance
of your smile in just two or three weeks. Dr. France Chevalier uses only safe biocompatible products
, including the gentle, yet effective, bleaching gel.
Why choose professional whitening
You have surely noticed the abundance of over-the-counter products claiming to whiten your teeth. Many patients ask us if these formulas actually work. The answer is maybe, to a certain extent. Some of them do little more than scour your teeth with abrasives, which can damage the enamel. Some formulas contain a mild concentration of the bleaching agents used in professional strength gels, providing moderate results.
None of these solutions will work as quickly and effectively as teeth whitening from your dentist, because the whitening gel is not as strong. An even more serious concern is the safety of over-the-counter whiteners. You may not know the ingredients or how much a product has been tested, and it is not advisable to embark on any treatment without a professional evaluation.
Is whitening right for you?
While the procedure is safe for the vast majority of patients, there are always exceptions. Dr. Chevalier puts her patients’ health first, and she will not prescribe any treatment without an evaluation to ensure that it is right for you. Whitening is not recommended for pregnant women, or people who smoke, and if you have untreated tooth damage exposing nerves or sensitive tissues, whitening gel may cause pain. Additionally, restorations such as fillings, crowns, and veneers will not bleach. The doctor may recommend replacing these restorations with a lighter color for a uniformly bright smile.
What to expect
For most people, teeth whitening is safe and highly effective. The process only takes two appointments, and optimal results are seen within three weeks
. During your first visit, Dr. Chevalier will take impressions, which are used to create customized clear bleaching trays. At your next appointment, the doctor will check the fit of your trays, and give you detailed instructions.
We will provide you with the tray and a gentle 10 % carbamide peroxide gel. You can whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home, at your convenience. Results will develop gradually over two or three weeks with daily sessions. Although whitening is not permanent, your bright new smile can last up to ten years. Touch-up treatments may be needed every several years to maintain results. If you drink coffee, tea, or red wine, or if you use tobacco products, your teeth will discolor faster.
